Michigan’s Grand Rapids – catapulted to “Furniture City” status when the region was "America’s Furniture Capital" – combines urban sophistication with small-town warmth for shopping extending way beyond breakfronts, chairs, or davenports. In 2005, Rogers Department Store on Paris Avenue closed to make way for Daniel’s, specializing in high-end men’s/women’s apparel. Downtown shopping also centers on Monroe Street’s tree-lined old-style brick storefronts for boutiques, galleries cafes, restaurants, and nightspots. Breton Village, boasts 50 or so boutiques, specialty shops, and eateries from Leigh’s Furs to Naked Plates. For destination shopping, Rivertown Crossings, anchored by Galyan’s, Kohl’s, Marshall Fields, JCPenney, Sears and Younkers, has 120 stores, five restaurants, a 20-screen theater and a carousel. The east side’s Woodland Shopping Center boasts more than 120 stores including Ann Taylor, Cache, Eddie Bauer, and Williams-Sonoma, along with Marshall Fields, JCPenney and Sears. Now with a facelift, CenterPointe Mall (one of the region’s older shopping centers with a new name) features Menards, Nordstrom Rack, and TJ Maxx. In East Grand Rapids, Gaslight Village’s streetlamps flicker with yesteryear’s charm to illuminate specialty shops like Florentine Ceramics and Hoffman Jewelers. The East Fulton shopping district, a mile or so from downtown, is filled with family-owned specialty shops including art and antique shops and furniture stores.
